Tatsuo Yasunaga is the Chair of the Board of Directors at Mitsui & Co. He was previously President and Chief Executive Officer for the Group between 2015 and 2021. Under his leadership, Mitsui successfully repositioned itself for future success by transforming and expanding its core business while at the same optimizing its portfolio. The Group also focused on new areas of growth, including energy solutions, healthcare/nutrition, and market Asia, driven by the creation of multifaced values and opportunities from digitalization, decarbonization, and consumers.
He has held various senior positions with the Group around the globe, including in Asia, North and Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East. Over the course of his illustrious career, he has gained diverse and deep business experience including stints at the World Bank and Toyo Engineering Corporation.
He first joined Mitsui in 1983, and in 2010 he served as the General Manager of the Corporate Planning & Strategy Division, where he led the formulation of its medium-term management strategy and business plans. He then became the Chief Operating Officer of the Integrated Transportation Systems Business Unit in 2013, driving growth for the segment through projects across various fields including automotive, construction machinery, shipping, aerospace and railway. During his tenure, he also initiated strategic initiatives in railway infrastructure and truck-leasing to expand the segment and enhance its competitiveness.
His motto in business is to “know and respect your partners”. Throughout his time at Mitsui, he studied the language, history and culture of each nation where he spent time. By personally visiting the countries where Mitsui operates in, he also hopes to show the importance of active dialogue with customers and partners with the aim of realizing 360° business innovation.
